General History, American & World History

Smithsonian

Interactive, multimedia presentations are centered on Smithsonian exhibits.  A great source for pictures and primary sources.

PBS History

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has constructed history lessons that include pictures, movies and the audio files of speeches.  If PBS has made a program on a topic, a lot of background and additional information on that topic can be accessed through this website.

The History Channel

The History Channel has also constructed multimedia presentations related to programs that have been shown on their station.  “This Day in History” is a popular item on this site; events regarding wars, entertainment, crime, literature and other topics can be searched by day. 

BBC - History

A history site from across the pond!  Like PBS in America, BBC has created multimedia history lessons based on programs shown in Britain.  The site includes wonderful timelines focused on English history.

eHistory.com

eHistory consists of over 130,000 pages of historical content; 5,300 timeline events; 800 battle outlines; 350 biographies and thousands of images and maps.  This site is maintained by the Ohio State University Department of History.

Focus on American History

American Memory – Library of Congress

The searchable digitized collections (images and films) on this web site can entrance a history buff for hours.  This is a must-see resource for African-American, Native American and Immigrant history

Digital History

This website was developed, and is maintained, by a collaborative partnership of universities, institutes, societies and government agencies.  It is a good resource for primary sources, ethnic voices and guides on writing history papers.

History and Politics Out Loud

This site hosts a searchable database of politically significant audio materials.  Audio files are searchable by speaker, date and title.  Some of the speeches have transcripts available.
